ETWEEN 1594 and 1634, Our Lady of Good Success appeared to the devout Conceptionist nun Mother Mariana de Jesus Torres at the Royal Monastery of the Immaculate Conception in Quito, Ecuador, where she left an astonishing series of prophesies which foretold with remarkable accuracy the crisis of the Church in our time.
The Holy Mother said her apparitions would “only become known to the general public in the 20th century”, but that “shortly after the middle of the 20th century ... passions will erupt and there will be a total corruption of customs, for Satan will reign almost completely.
“The Catholic spirit will rapidly decay. The Devil will try to persecute ministers of the Lord ... and will corrupt many of them.”
But even in this dark time the Queen of Heaven promised that there would still be “a small number of souls who, hidden, will preserve the treasure of the faith and virtues”.
In the end, as she reiterated at Fatima in 1917, the Holy Mother said that when evil appeared to
have triumphed “I, in a marvellous way, will dethrone the proud and accursed Satan, trampling him under my feet and fettering him in the infernal abyss”.
The painting shows Mary in the second of these apparitions, in January 1599. The Church approved the apparitions in 1611.
